Make-A-Wish BC & Yukon Canada Donor Story

Wishes are waiting:

Help create a legacy of hope, strength and joy

Ross Hetherington, Regional Vice-President
Make-A-Wish BC & Yukon Canada

It’s probably true for most of us that contemplating our own mortality isn’t something we want to spend too much time doing. Yet, we likely do spend time thinking about the kind of positive marks we will leave on the world once we are gone.

The fact of the matter is, great wealth is not required to leave an incredible legacy for others, and the power of a wish granted through Make-A-Wish® is an example of how your legacy can be paid forward to others. Small kindnesses, considered now, can have an incredible impact on a charity’s mission going forward.

For many charities, this is perhaps truer now than ever before. While we are currently granting wishes, the COVID-19 global pandemic has put many
kinds of wishes on hold, and we now have hundreds of children battling critical illnesses who are waiting for their wishes to be granted when it’s safe for everyone to travel once again.

The Trailblaze Challenge is an annual fund-raising event supporting Make-A-Wish® BC & Yukon Canada. This year’s virtual event gave participants the opportunity to hike 100 kms in total, anywhere they pleased, to raise much-needed funds to grant the wishes of children.

By leaving a bequest in your Will, making a gift of life insurance or designating a charity as a beneficiary of your RRSP, RRIF or TFSA, you will be selflessly giving and helping transform lives. Once the world gets past the pandemic, charities are going to have more work to do than ever before to ensure that our communities have reasons to hope for a brighter future. This work will continue for years to come.

We are grateful to donors who have left personal legacies to Make-A-Wish®. They’ve made a powerful statement by ensuring that future generations of wish children, their families and others can benefit from future wish experiences.

There are tax benefits with each type of legacy giving. It is recommended that you discuss legacy gift intentions with your financial and legal advisors, as well as with your family. Thank you for sharing the power of giving!
