Our fingerprints don’t fade from the lives we touch

We all create our legacy every day.

It is in the values we hold dear. It is in the work we do in the world. It is in what we share with others.

The most marvellous thing? Every day you can add to your legacy—whether through talking with family about what is important to you, volunteering for your favourite cause, or through your day-to-day way of being in the world.

Some legacies are through charitable giving, it’s true—but those gifts are more than just dollars and cents—they are legacies of love, legacies of compassion, legacies of hope.

It is one of the ways that everyday people like us can have an impact on the future, because you don’t have to be wealthy to leave a legacy. Gifts of three, five or 10 per cent of what remains from your estate, after deducting all expenses and specific gifts to friends and family, can do so much.

Some legacies are through charitable giving, it’s true—but those gifts are more than just dollars and cents—they are legacies of love, legacies of compassion, legacies of hope.

When you give to a charity through a legacy gift such as a gift in your Will, life insurance policy, or gift of securities, you make a statement about your beliefs, your commitment to a better future, and what’s in your heart.
What wonderful things to be remembered for: for your caring for others, for your hope for the future, and for the generosity of your heart.

We can be intentional about how we wish to be remembered, by making choices today—choices about how we show kindness to others, about our character, and about the values and causes we choose to invest in for the future.

It is easier than you might think, and in the following pages you’ll find ideas from experts, stories from people like yourself, and some great organizations doing good work in the world. So please, after you’ve taken care of your loved ones, consider a charitable gift as part of your legacy.

AS WITH ALL THINGS IN LIFE, SOME THINGS END, AND OTHER THINGS BEGIN

If a legacy is what we give to others, what we’re remembered for, and the lasting imprint we leave in the world—then the work of LEAVE A LEGACY™, and these supplements over the years, is something to be truly proud of.

And while this is the final “Power of Giving” supplement you’ll see from LEAVE A LEGACY™ and the Greater Vancouver Chapter of the Canadian Association of Gift Planners, it is not where the impact ends.

No, the impact of all the hard work of so many people over the years continues through all of the connections that have been made, people who’ve been inspired to give, and chari-table gifts readers have chosen to make part of their future legacy.

So, thank you to all of those who’ve given of their time to make these supplements what they are, and thank you to those who’ve been readers over the years.

You’ll see something new from the Canadian Association of Gift Planners soon: Will Power. It is the largest national effort in Canadian history to invite people just like you to change the world with a charitable gift in your Will, while still supporting those you love.
